Romance scams take more than your heart

Don’t fall head over heels for a scammer

Romance scammers are in it for the long game. They will say whatever it takes to cultivate a deep emotional connection over time, all while patiently waiting for the right moment to request more than just your heart.

What is a romance scam?

Romance scams occur when fraudsters create fake identities on social media or dating sites to build trust with potential victims. They manipulate victims into sending money or sharing personal banking information. Once they get what they want, they disappear or keep asking for more money, hoping to take advantage of feelings for financial gain.

Know the signs

  • Their profile and photos seem too perfect.
  • They quickly push to move communication off the dating or social site.
  • They make constant excuses to avoid meeting in person.
  • They request inappropriate photos or financial information.
  • They try to isolate you from friends and family.
  • They claim to be working overseas to justify not meeting.
  • They create urgent scenarios requiring immediate financial help.
  • Their messages contain poor grammar or inconsistent details.
  • They profess intense feelings unusually quickly.

How to protect yourself:

  1. Be careful what you post and make public online. Scammers can use this information to better understand and target you.
  2. Research the person’s photo and profile using online searches to see if the image, name, or details have been used elsewhere.
  3. Progress slowly and ask lots of questions.
  4. Set up card controls on your debit and credit cards to be alerted when your card is used.
  5. Only send money to people you know through secure online payment platforms. Located in the Simmons Bank app, Zelle® enables you to send and receive money with friends and family you know wherever they bank in the U.S.
